Using a replacement router (and a modem if needed) in place of my current Sky router hub

Hello,

I am currently using Sky Broadband Superfast package. Access line speed to
my Sky router is about 52 Mb/s. My Sky router hub model is SR203.

I frequently have issues trying to get my Homepod mini's work properly around my
flat. The handover functionality on the homepods doesn't work well and it keeps getting disconnected.

Very frequently the connection drops and also disconnects.

The same occurs with a few other internet connected devices around my flat.

I would like to get a better signal strength around my flat and to have a more reliable internet connection and consistent speed.

I currently have a ASUS ROG GT-AX11000 router with me, and I thought of using this, to have a stronger internet connection for all of my devices inside my flat.

The question I have is, would I need a modem (and what model should I use) ? alongside the ASUS ROG GT-AX11000 router ?

How can I get the entire setup completed ?

Follow instructions in link to turn tp link into modem bridge

On asus then enter dhcp option 61 in the client identifier field in the format

Anything@skydsl|anything

@cookiemonsteruk Thanks for your reply. I understand now, that I will require a modem and a router to complete my setup.

Would you mind letting me know if the model of the modem you mentioned 'TD-W9970' will be good enough for my internet speed, or should I go for any other upgraded models to be slightly more futureproof ?

And £35 from argos its pretty much expendable when you move to fttp. And the gt ax11000 will already have been configured so i think the asus should serve you a while

TD-W9970 >> ASUS ROG GT-AX11000

Which means the Sky Hub will be completely replaced by the TD-W9970 modem ?

In terms of futureproof when you move to fttp openreach will supply you with an optical modem the tp then is redundant but with a max speed of 100Mbps it will serve you well

Yes, unless you switch off wifi on sky and set up asus as access point

@cookiemonsteruk I suppose at that point the optical modem can be just directly connected to ASUS ROG GT-AX11000 ? There should not be any other upgrades required anymore at that point.

Yes, the rog would be directly connected to the ont . The only modification with fttp would be authenticating with dhcpv6pd in addition to dhcp option 61

Enable dual stack in wan ipv4/ipv6

Select dhcpv6 dynamic in wan

Enable prefix delegation pd in wan

On lan select slaac/statless for address creation

I found another newer model of the modem you had recommended me earlier. It is called,

TP-Link AC2100 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit VDSL/ADSL Modem Router. I found it here:

Do you feel this model could be a better alternative to the previous one you suggested ?

Also could you kindly confirm if I may need to get this device to complete my setup ?

Re the microfilter you will only need it if you mastersocket isn't already pre filtered ie one broadband port and one telephone port

Re the modem router you are paying extra for the functions of the router where in reality you just need the modem and the rog will do the routing. In addition i don't know if that model can be put into modem mode

In other words the modems are likely the same. The only difference between the td w9970 and the vr600 is the rudimentary 2.4ghz wifi hence the price. in both cases the router will not be used and the rog is far and away the better router.
