Changing Router

Hello,

First time poster, short time lurker!

I've read the forums and I feel like I'm somewhat abreast of the issues facing me with removing the Sky SR203 Router.

I currently have a pair or Asus XT8's but facing the well documented double NAT and have considered going down the draytek route. I have since came across the Asus DSL-AX82U and I wonder if anyone else has used this modem. Ideally I'd then extend the AiMesh with the XT8's (pending option 61 support on the AX82U.)

I also note that the AX82U is AX5400 compared to the XT8 AX6600 so a potential speed decrease

Any feedback or user experience would be greatly appreciated.

The higher-rated speed wireless router is 802.11ax with 512/1024 quadruple amplitude modulation (512/1024-QAM) which no clients support to my knowledge currently, so the benefits are debatable you won't get that speed benefit until at least 2 years or more into the future.

Recommend you save money by purchasing a lower standard 802.11ax wireless router with the DHCP client option 61 for Sky support.

The asus zen wifi xt8 router/mesh appears to authenticate sky dhcp option 61/mer by themselves. Therefore you would just need a standalone modem for them to authenticate as opposed to buying a modem/router combo. Can you confirm if what you have is the router and satellite or 2 satellite mesh. Also are you on superfast, g.fast or full fttp

@mae-3 thank you, simply future proof g as best I can.

@cookiemonsteruk can confirm OEM firmware supports option 61 on the XT8's. Reason for the AX82U was simply to extend the mesh but with the benefit of not requiring a standalone modem.

I currently have Sky 150mb.

Is that ultrafast g.fast or seperate ont as the ax82 popped recently as a g.fast router but does not appear to be g.fast

You would would have been issued with the sr204 for g.fast. also you would have had a seperate openreach ont modem installed for fttp negating the need for another modem

@cookiemonsteruk thank you, I have read through that post previously which lead me down this path.

From what I've read getting the Asus AX82U, inputting the option 61 string and adding to the mesh sounds like it should work, but I'd like a external voice to say that yes it will work or yes it will work and I have that setup or to say no that won't work because of xxx

The Asus DSL-AX82U is a vdsl modem router. You've already by the sounds of it got an fibre optic modem and a xt8 router mesh that should work directly bridged to the ont. The advantage of the ax82 is that if you can bridge it to the ont then its ROG architecture makes it ideal for gaming
