Bought a second hand sky router, can't use it

I bought a second hand sky router as my current router Is old (sr102) so I saw on eBay a er115 that was £5. I have heard people say they don't always work but I thought as it's cheap I'll get it out.

When I tried to replace my current router with my new one, it made a whole new network with a different name that I couldn't connect to and has a solid amber light on the internet section of the box . Is there anything I can do to make it so it works? Thanks

Apologies if stating the obvious, but I assume with your new router you received a new router password in order to connect to it?

@Anonymous Do you mean the password you use to connect to it on devices? Because if so then yeah, it's on the bottom of the router

If the old sr102 still works it would indicate this one has gone to meet its maker.

In addition if you are on superfast and .in contract they would normally send out on loan an er115 anyway.

This is an on loan device and should not be for sale.

@ItsAlexH there is a reason that hub was so cheap its broken. Any ER115 will connect to a Sky Superfast or Sky ADSL line automatically if it doesn't its bust simple as that.

Sky charge ex-subscribers a non-return fee of £50 for those, which would probably suggest £5 isn't going to get a working one. As @TechmanagerMal said, it should also indicate they aren't supposed to be on sale..

When i upgraded to the sr203 less than a year ago from er115 i was told that i was free to do what i want with the er115. So the moral of the story is you get what you pay for whether its from a friend or off ebay

Thanks for all the response guys, didn't think it would work but thought ah well, only £5 so worth a shot.

Anywho, i subscibed to sky in 2018 and er115 started playing up in 2020. So limited life span in todays consumer electronics market. What speeds are you getting to see if a 3rd party dsl modem router may of benefit

@cookiemonsteruk I get 3mbps while downloading anything, which is pretty slow compared to most other people. Also, the internet cuts out and has to be reset atleast 3-4 times a day, which is extremely annoying. Was thinking it's because of our old router.
