Someone called saying they are returning my call but I didn't call them

I had a call from an elderly man saying I had called him even though we were not in at the time, He even played back the phone number and it was our landline number but it wasn't us that made the call. How can this happen?

@goldsworthy100 In case you have a crossed line (if there is still such a thing), trying ringing your mobile from your landline and see what landline number pops up on your screen. If it isn't yours you'll need to contact Sky who can get Openreach to investigate/fix.

@goldsworthy100 scammers often 'spoof' (fabricate) the number they're calling from to hide the real number, and to make the caller id look more plausible. It's possible that the number a scammer has used on this occasion happens to be your number. It's unlikely, but if it happens regularly, you could use the Sky Talk Shield to block calls from people who think you've called them.
