Ultrafast broadband G.Fast alternate modems?

Hi,

There is a Draytek Vigor 166 modem which can be used in bridge mode and there is a UK version coming soon which supports G.Fast.

What i noticed with ultrafast broadband, is that the phone line has to be connected to the sky hub, is there a way i can still use another modem while still being able to have the phone line and internet active?

Or can i simply use the sky hub and leave the phone line connected to it, while using a different modem for internets sake?

Cheers

I doubt either of those will work, but no-one has had 'Ultrafast' from Sky over G.fast for long enough to know.

Any reason why it wouldn't work? The vigor 130 works as long as the router has dhcp option 61, so i assume the 166 will work.

The only confusing part is the phone line connected to the hub, does the phone line still work if the internet cable is disconnected?

There is no 'phone line' any more: the copper from the G.fast pod to your address is a data bearer carrying VOIP traffic from the Hub amongst everything else. Once you are on that technology, it's best to forget other concepts.

While it should be quite possible to use an alternative router for internet access, including non-Sky VOIP, it's unlikely you will be able to get the bundled Sky Talk over VOIP to function if the Hub isn't the authenticating device.

Ahh i see thank you, that clears up some things for me.

So will Il not be able to use an alternate router without the VOIP phone working? If not, im guessing it will be a double NAT issue if i do decide to connect another router into the hub?

Secondly, would connecting the sky router to the chosen router via ethernet, then have the other router connecting to the vigor modem work? That way the router is getting internet, while the sky hub will also gain connection but will only be usedfor the VOIP phone, and it will be connected via ethernet to the router?

If not, im guessing the hub will require the internet connection directly for the Voip to work? Also im not sure if the hub would even recieve an internet connection when connected to another router.

Many scenrios yet to be experimented with

Hi Max,

Just had ultrafast installed and have been tearing my hair out trying to use my Asus router as an access point, there are massive DHCP problems with the SR204. Can you confirm if I put the router [SR204] into DSL mode I can then connect my router without NAT issues or the like and use the Asus DHCP? I dont need the VOIP as my landline hasnt been used in years.

Many thanks

Im pretty sure they will now work with UK ISP's

The DrayTek Vigor 166 modem connects to G.fast and VDSL connections, for full performance with Ultrafast and Superfast FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) services. Connect your Ethernet-based firewall or router to Ultrafast and Superfast broadband, simply by adding in the Vigor 166 modem. The DrayTek Vigor 166 operates as a full-bridge straight out of the box and is pre-configured to work with most UK DSL connections, with no configuration needed on the modem itself. Support for Vectoring, G.INP and VDSL2 35b SuperVectoring, ensures full compatibility with UK VDSL and G.fast networks.

So fingers crossed

Hi @Maxrb123

May I ask how could you get the sr204 in DSL mode? I can't find that option. And how could you find the username and password when setting the Netgear router?

Thank you
