I have a suggestion but please correct me if it will not work.

I was thinking to connect the Q main to router via wifi instead of ethernet (sounds crazy suggesting that doesnt it?) as the router sits right on top of the cabinet where the Q sits.

Maybe the connection for the main box may be more stable this way? I know, it sounds crazy saying the Q may be more stable over wifi than ethernet 🤣

Then, im going to continue connecting the minis via switch. Will this work?

Or in my case i should be asking should this work?

Hi all,

I recently had an engineer call out to my property to fix a dish issue, little did I know this would be the downfall of my sky q system.

Prior to the day he came out, I had my main box hardwired to a switch which is connected to my router, one mini hardwired to same switch and two other minis working of WiFi with boosters... it worked very well for two years.

as soon as the engineer came out for the dish, he decided to "update" all my Q boxes and boosters as they were "older versions", so I thought why not and allowed him to do so. Since then, my minis have been going crazy, constant drop outs... so out comes another sky engineer. He suggests a hard

wire and I agreed. So I bought a brand new switch for the two boxes that were on WiFi and connect the switch to a CAT6 port, which is connected to my router.

so currently the set up is:

MAIN TO ROUTER.

TWO MINIS UPSTAIRS TO SWITCH WHICH IS CONNECTED TO A CAT 6 PORT (CAT 6 DIRECT TO ROUTER)

ONE MINI CONNECTED TO A DIFFERENT SWITCH (this switch also connected direct to router).

And with this set up I am STILL experience constant freezing and connection loss from the minis. I'm totally bamboozled, the system is hardwired, how can it possibly fail?

since I was also have problems with the wireless set up (which I had previously used on the old boxes for two years without problems), I am thinking I have a dodgy main box.

could anyone provide any possible solutions to how I can get the ship steady once again?

im at my ends wit.

neel

If you dont one step which often improves stability on hard wired boxes is to disable their wifi. The setting is in the hidden engineer's menu which is opened by nacigating to Settings but entering 0,0,1 on the remote before Select.

If you are on Sky Broadband your boxes should cope with both wifi and ethernet being on.

Could be the switches causing an issue. Can you try wiring one or two boxes up directly instead of through the switch? Easiest way would be to just plug the cable that usually feeds the switch directly into the Q box.

I think i have got one step further.

I myself have been away for the week, but family have said this whole week the SKY Q MAIN, keeps disconnecting from internet.... two "x's". Obviously if this happends im going to have problems with the mini.

The main box is hardwired direct to router. WIFI turned off on box.

Only reconnects after hard reboot, or itll be connected the next morning. Unreal.

Definitely not my internet, its always up and running.

Could i have a faulty box? Or is there something else i can do to stop main disconnecting?

So main Q box is direct ethernet to router? Not through a switch?

Can you also try changing the ethernet mode on your router? Sometimes Q boxes are quite picky. Try changing it to 10/100 instead of 10/100/1000

Yes, Q box is direct into router rather than switch, it's more stable than into the switch for some reason.

How do I do this? What setting would I find this under on my router settings page?

Also, what does this do exactly?

I dont mean it as a permenant fixuture, only temp. If it does fix your issue then you know theres a problem somewhere, possibly cable related but could be something else.

Can't be the cabling, it's the main box which keeps losing connection.

You'd think taking out the Ethernet and plugging it back in will establish a new connection but it doesn't. You need to restart the box for it to re connect. It's like the Ethernet connection is just going dead.

Like I said though, highly doubt it's the cable, as when I take the cable out and plug it back in, box is unresponsive to it and there's still no connection. As soon as you turn it on and off from the power cable, connection is back up.

Sky boosters cannot be used for that link. You can either use wps or choose the SSID and enter the passcode.

Sky Q minis and Sky boosters link to a closed 5GHz signal from the main Q box by wps.
