Initial Thoughts On Sky Glass

Had Sky Glass delivered today so thought I'd share my initial thoughts.

Panther delivery guys arrived within the 2 hr delivery slot and set the whole thing up like a well oiled machine.

Plugged in and connected to router via ethernet cable. Software updated speedily quickly followed by the various apps. Netflix app already set up but had to sign into all the others - Prime, iPlayer etc.

Happy with the default picture settings (previous tv was 43inch Samsung qled approx 2 years old). Had a bit of a tinker later at my wife's request and improved further.

One benefit is that my Sky Q remote also appears to work with Glass!.

Obviously a different UI that will take a bit of getting used to but not a deal breaker. One thing I noticed to Q is that the option to watch from the start is best used through the EPG rather than the Playlist.

Playlist as many have said leaves a lot to be desired but will persevere for now. Have added a number of programs to the Playlist over the next 7 days so will see how things turn out when I come to view them. A couple of gripes that hopefully should be easy to address. Firstly when a program is added to Playlist it is not easy to see this on the EPG - perhaps a red tick or something similar could be added here (like the red "R" that appears on Q when an item is set to record. Secondly I added a couple of programs to Playlist whilst having a play with the functionality. I now can't delete these. Hopefully this will get amended so I'm not stuck with them for eternity!!.

Lastly and perhaps the major issue for me so far. Once a program is added to Playlist it also provides you with all previous series of the program irrespective of which channel it was one. As others have said it is very difficult amongst all of this to find the one program you are interested in. What would help a great deal if the programs could have a date attached to them. Similarly once a program has been viewed it would help if it was shown as such as this would then enable you to select the next one in the series to view. At the moment it is very hit and miss.

All in all though a decent first day's impression. Time will tell however as it get used more. Hopefully Sky will also make some changes here to enable the Playlist function to be much more user friendly - particularly after the number of comments that have been made on here about it.

You mentioned that you had used an ethernet cable. Does that help with streaming at all and do i hace to change the setting to use the ethernet cable.

Hey

I'm 24 hours in myself going from Q to Glass.

I still like to use a TV Guide. This one is obviously a bit more basic.

No +1 and no Documentaries section.

Bloomberg I didn't realise was going away. Just a little bit of a niggle but not the end of the world. Hope it comes back though.

I think the biggest thing for me is Sky Store. In Q it was all incorporated in the menu and search. And you could search catchup TV as well.

I am a bit surprised that Sky Store is not on the TV menu and not it search.

Yeah I can see my purchases but I'd like to be able to browse on my TV for Sky Store films and Box Office stuff rather than having to go online separately.

Does anyone else agree or am I missing something?

Sky are working on integrating Sky Store fully into Glass. but it just wasn't ready at release.

It's in their interests to do it - it'll make it easier for customers to spend money with them 😀

There was never going to be a +1 service on a streaming TV, the same as there's no SD channels. There's (in theory) no need for +1 channels. Sky Store is (I beleive) coming but then so is Christmas 😞

Yeah the plus 1 thing as I wrote it of course that makes sense that you don't need it.

I like the play list thing.

for me it adding the whole series of something to watch back on is quite cool. Can understand how it might be annoying to some. I'll keep going with it.

But yeah if Sky Store will be fully integrated and on the search I think that will be very cool.

@rhysdrummer Hiya. I've always believed that an ethernet connection gives better performance than WiFi and hence my use hear. I've not tried to change between the 2 I just selected the ethernet connection option during the Set Up process. Hope that helps

Oh and I'd like to see the TV and pucks have apple HomeKit integration. So I can set up some automation.

I know this wasn't on Sky Q either but I was able to use Homebridge to connect those as someone built an api for that.

And eventually maybe that will happen for Glass as well but it would be nice if they properly did that.

Don't know if anyone has heard anything to that effect for maybe the future?

We had our sky glass delivered yesterday. Finding it very hard to get used to the new layout and the fact that channels are missing. Mainly the +1 channels as we do tend to use them a lot and upon investigation, some of the programmes that I would normally watch on +1 could not be found on the on demand service. Picture and sound quality is amazing however I feel that the lack of the +1 channels and the fact that it isn't so easy to navigate around may put people off. I'm hoping it gets better as I have been regretting switching from sky Q today.

Also wondering what the back up option is if the WiFi goes down? Is there a way to plug in the aerial from the satellite dish in order to still use the subscription?

It's not great at all. Really frustrating and disappointing. Wish I hadn't bothered to be honest.

Hopeful someone is listening because it's so not user friendly at all.

Kind of like they tried to make it like netflix but that really doesn't work with sky.

@Rh2016 @You have a backup option. You can plug an aerial lead into the back of the sky glass, should the connection drop this becomes an option to use with freebies channels and a TV guide.

You cannot use the satellite dish as a backup though.
