Sky Glass review: HDR performance

While SDR performance is admirable and overall picture quality is pleasing, the Sky Glass isn’t a strong performer when it comes to HDR content, despite its Dolby Vision certification.

Coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut is only 70%, although those colours are reproduced accurately with an average Delta E error of 2.42, but it’s the peak brightness that really spoils the party.

With the D65 Standard white point mode selected and local dimming enabled, we found peak HDR brightness reached a maximum of only 439cd/m² and then only with a full-field white pattern displayed; it dipped to 270cd/m² on a 10% window. Those figures are distinctly average for a TV costing £849 and leaves Sky Glass lacking pop when displaying HDR content

Indeed, the results are similar to those achieved by the Hisence and 43in and samsung au900 both budget TVs costing less than £500.

All of the channels are UHD some are UHD HDR as channel 3050 is. On glass the brighter channels are non HDR, basically because the tv can't handle UHD HDR due to technical limitations, so they appear dull/dark - they shouldn't and song on decent televisions - such as a good QLED or an OLED set. Effectively sky have used a low to mid range panel, which isn't any good for HLG UHD HDR

For a tv to produce a half decent picture on UHD HDR using HLG the tv has to have a minimum NITS of around 800. Sky glass maxes out at 630 NITS. I would also suggest you try sky glass, it may give you some more first hand experience when you are advising/commenting on the thread.
