PS4 lagging with wired connection on superfast broadband

I switched from vodafone to sky about a month ago as it was a better deal and same speeds. I am getting fine download speeds, however I am now getting a lot of lag on my ps4 which is wired by ethernet.

I'm mostly playing Fifa and cod warzone. in ~50% of games I play on Fifa I now get high ping/packet loss indicators on screen. I never once had these indicators with Vodafone, I didn't even know they existed, so the game is close to unplayable at a competitive level. It's harder to notice on warzone but I feel like I've gotten worse recently so maybe partly due to lag.

Anyone got any ideas? Do I need a better router? I'm fairly sure it's due to the provider switch/new hub as the problems started at exactly the same time and have persisted

@what+doyouwant How are you connecting the PS4? I know you said via Ethernet (assuming it's in the same room as the router) but is this direct or is via any adapters such as powerline?

Which router did Sky give you? Can you post your router stats as well? It can be any number of things causing ping issues...

Ps4 is plugged directly into router, which is plugged directly into the wall(bt openreach, phone socket? not sure on terminology). Exactly like it was with vodfaone, however with the vodafone router I had a microfilter in between so could be a factor?

Router model is 'Sky Q Broadband Hub 4 Dual Band Wireless Router Sky SR203'.

@what+doyouwant no that's not quite what we need. You need to click the maintenance tab and then scroll down and select statistics and post what it shows in that window.

The problem could well be staring you in the face there and could be a big factor...if you had a filter in that socket with the old ISP yet you haven't plugged it in since having the Sky broadband then your connection is likely not being filtered correctly, which as well as lag will reduce your connection speed. The router should always be plugged into the "master" socket, and if it is not a filtered faceplate one with two connections splitting the data and voice, then you will need filters on every phone socket in the property that is in use.

Router statistics above, can you make anything out of that? I'm guessing that may not show anything to do with the playstation(LAN?) as I haven't been on it since last night.

I tried it with the microfilter in first and couldnt get any internet, tried a few different things and it eventually worked without the microfilter so I thought I needed to remove it. I think the master socket was upgraded a few years back to include 2 different sockets, one thin, rectangular one and one more square shaped above it(thats the technical term i believe). My understanding was that this meant the filter was no longer needed because of this, but if i can't get anything else working I will try again with microfilter attached and get back to you.

If the master socket has two sockets then you don't need a microfilter, remove the microfilter in this case.

We'll have a look at the router stats when approved. Also, can you do a latency ping test to bbc.co.uk, the command is 'ping bbc.co.uk' without the single quotes on the command prompt for windows or terminal prompt for macOS and post the result?

FYI, I wont play a game on Fifa unless the pre game ping indicator is less than 26ms, but I still get the indicators in game of packet loss and high ping and theres quite severe lag in game

Thanks for that information the latency to bbc.co.uk looks good on the command prompt. Will look at the router stats next, can you confirm which router you are using the Sky ER110/ER115 or latest SR203?

The router stats look good and as you are connected by an ethernet cable to the PS4 I blame the SR203 router for the lag with its QoS that favours TV stream activity. Replacing the router with something more suitable is going to be difficult in your case because you are using Sky's new VoIP for the phone and the phone plugs into the back of the router. And there are no technical details available for how Sky do VoIP!

I must state you are pretty fussy on who you play FIFA with because with the latency that you'll accept you'll only be playing FIFA with those in the UK...

Ok thanks, guess thats not ideal then...

I don't think I'm being fussy, maybe the fifa pre game indicator is dodgy but ~90% of my games show <=26ms ping pre game. Any higher tends to be super laggy so I just search for another game, the next one is usally lower

Don't blame you for wishing to play FIFA with UK players for the lag is considerable better, I play FIFA on the Xbox myself and love it but am rubbish at playing FIFA. I don't get lagging issues unless playing a friend in Australia! 😀

@what+doyouwant maybe you have a "bufferfloat" issue using the sky hub...be interesting to run a test and see
