Sky Broadband to use Virgin Media Fibre network

Rumours are rife that Sky Broadband have signed a deal to be Virgin Medias (Liberty Global) first customer. This means that Sky will have not only access to the current Openreach (BT) lines but also means that Sky will be able to offer much higher speeds to a bigger customer base. In theory it means that if you live in a house/flat that can get VM broadband, you will be able to access this through Sky. Due to launch in the Autumn with a staggered roll out. If it happens, I cant wait, it means that I will be able to get much higher speeds, without the hassle of using VM and their awful customer service.

Where are you seeing these rumours? The only thing I'd heard about what O2 and Virgin partnering but that was a while ago.

@Anonymous You'd still be running on VM's network and equipment though...and most people I know who have had Virgin media or continue too...well I won't repeat some if the words they've used to describe the reliability of the service/network...but one of them begins with S and end in T and it's isn't soot....🙈😬😂

Too busy fighting O2/Virgin merger with the CMA They don't need to expand their customer base through Virgin when Openreach already covers some 95% of premises

Not true. Sky use openreach lines to their own kit in exchanges. They could do the same with Virgin Media, and simply use the cable to their own kit

95 percent of what? BT currently have only 5 million Ultrafast lines. Virgin have 15 million.

Fighting what. The merger was cleared and went through in early June. Not sure what you are on about. VMO2 is now one company

Confusing though: the actual Virgin 'full fibre' network is currently pretty negligible, as the vast majority of their delivery to consumer property is over the coaxial copper cable they've been laying for 20 years.

Agreed, but it delivers speeds of up to 1GB. The customer just cares about the end speed.

The vast majority of the VM network is actually FTTC, so what you are saying isnt true. Its fibre to their cabinet in your street and then copper between that and your home.

@Anonymous Rumours are not really rife, this is something that was rumoured 2 years ago but little to no movement has been made.

The article from April this year you posted a link to doent have any more info than the 2019 rumours, if anything is to happen it won't be for a while and maybe complicated or challenged by BT now Virgin and O2 have merged.

Wrong again. You really need to get your facts straight. Openreach have discussed the possibility of working with Oneweb in rural areas only, the max speed is around 200mb at the moment with highish ping rates. A deal between Sky and VM would offer five times that speed. Have you seen the price of Satellite broadband ?
