Starting out on Sky broadband the base speed I connected at was around 59Mb, but over a year the speed is slowly climbing from that base speed. Now normally I never have to re-start the router unless there is maintence or the router firmware updates.

But yesterday checking the router stats met with a downstream noise margin of 7.8 or there about. So thought possbile line issue, my speed was sitting around 65Mb, as shown in the router stats below.

So I did a router disconnect and reconnect to see if this would clear the raised noise margin, I was pleased to see an increase of 4Mb on the connection speed to just over 69Mb

Upon doing another cabinet check, I can see that I am getting close to the upper threshold that my line is able to give me. Nearly getting back to the initial speeds I was getting away back in 2012. Have not made any changes here, so these changes mustbe external.

@Highlinder the speed increase is due to the reduction in the noise margin as the conditions on your line have improved. That could be because of work done by Openreach or simply because of better weather.

6.6dB is still somewhat higher than you ideally want. I believe that ECI cabinets can run down to 6dB. My own line is running around 4dB but it is connected to a Huawei cabinet which can run down to 3dB if line connections allow but as I hit the hard limit of 80Mb/s that is the limiting factor for me.. .

Do you know the approximate line length to the cabinet?. If @mae-3 is around he can probably tell you a lot more

@ChriseeI normally would sit around 6.3,but for that change last night I was like oh what is wrong. I know the line length is around 400 metres. But in checking I can now get g.fast, which I was not able to get before.

As I said in my first post I did start out at 76Mb, but over time that got lower with more people taking up FTTC. But have noticed that my speed is going back up snice the move over to Sky last year from BT.

Normally stable connection, so never bother there with that. But I will take the speed jump any day.

The noise margin going up over time and then down when the router is rebooted and speed increasing is an indication that line conditions have improved, eg: less crosstalk. The likely reason is there are fewer users on the cabinet VDSL2 and the reason for that is FTTP is available in your area and more users are moving over to that set-up is my thinking?

@mae-3Never re-start the router, always if I can drop the connection and re-connect, which I was able to do in this case. Also might be the fact that more people have also moved over to Virgin as that is also in my area now.

I will happy to take the speed. But will see if I can get a decent deal on g.fast or FTTP when my current deal is up later this year.
