I bought a Xiaomi Poco X3 as a backup phone for myself along with a PAYG Vodafone SIM card. I'd sold all of my old phones and realised I should get a spare one in case anything went awry with my current Samsung handset. To my surprise, the Poco X3 is a very capable handset for the price, and I began wondering how good it would be as my daily driver.

However, when I swapped the SIM with my regular Sky Mobile SIM, I got an error message about configuration and having to contact Sky for support. The message didn't stay on screen for long so I can't remember exactly what it said, but I tried texting my usual number and it seemed to work fine. Now though, the Poco refuses to recognise the Sky SIM. In the settings it thinks there's no SIM card installed, even though the Vodafone SIM works fine and the Sky SIM works in my Samsung handset.

I spoke to Sky today, who said they'd send out a new SIM, but it made me wonder if its possible that Sky SIMs just aren't compatible with my handset. Is this possible, or could there be another underlying issue?

If the phone is unlocked then a Sky sim should work in it but you might need to send some settings to the phone first and you should be able to do that from the Sky website here:

@caesarome I've tried going into the My Sky app and requesting the configuration messages to be sent to my number but nothing came through. It says it could take a few minutes but this was about three hours ago.

You could try setting them up yourself:

They can be set up somewhere like Settings > Mobile Data > Create New Access Point...

Name: Sky Mobile Internet

APN: mobile.sky

@caesarome The access point settings disappear when I insert the Sky SIM. It appeared when the Vodafone SIM was in, but when you open the settings for SIM cards and mobile networks, everything is greyed out because it thinks there's no SIM installed, so presumably the APN settings are in there and I can't get to them.

@caesarome It's decided to recognise the SIM suddenly, for some reason. The message I received was "This terminal cannot be configured remotely, please contact customer support for further assistance". Will filling in the access point info solve this, or is this another issue?

Never mind, I just noticed it was already filled in! It's deciding to work without issue now, complete with mobile data. Thank you so much for your help anyway!
