Currently in the midst of changing broadband providers, I am with talk talk as of now but looking to change.

My only concern is which would work best with Sky Q, because at current the household is suffering from speed drops and poor coverage due to the Sky Q.

I have 1 main sky Q box downstairs, 1 sky booster connected ethernet to my actual talktalk router, one mini downstairs which is connected by this booster, one booster upstairs connected ethernet to the other mini.

Anyone know what to do in this situation?

Is sky broadband suitable for gaming?

We use almost 1TB of data a month :')
I've been looking into the BT disks, and powerline adapters, was wondering if someone who has a similar situation could give me some insight.

Thanks

Hi @Spiug

Difficult choice.

In theory Sky should be the most suitable with connection to the router on 5 Ghz and all Q boxes as hotspots.

However sitting here with BTHH6 with main Q box and one mini on full Ethernet with two further minis on Devolo 1200 Powerline i wouldn't even consider change.

All Q boxes have WiFi off and BT WiFi is being cloned and broadcasted by further Devolo WiFi units.

Couldn't comment on other brands but for me the choice was well worth it.

@Spiug wrote:

Is sky broadband suitable for gaming?

Broadband is broadband: it typically all connects back over Openreach infrastructure anyway.

Some forum posters do complain about additional latency on Sky broadband: this may be due to how Sky implements the mandatory Home Office filtering and age controls (as all ISPs have to do).

Usually connectivity within the property is the biggest single factor: for gaming you'd ideally be on wired connections to the router.

@Spiug wrote:

Hi @oldfella,

Sounds good to me!

Next concern is I am unsure how different the home hub is to the new smart hub.

Can one powerline adapter be connected to say 2/3 other ones?

I think the only main difference is that you cannot split the WiFi bands on the latest BT Smart Hub @Spiug

With all Powerline Adaptors you have one connected to the router and another at each device you want to connect.

WiFi units can be placed anywhere on the mains circuit.

Powerline success does depend on the condition and complexity of of your mains circuit and is not guaranteed.

Ideally if you can get the main Q box on Full Ethernet this is best.

My original choice of Devolo was that they also use the Earth circuit as well as the mains conductors for connection. Not many did and I do not know which other brands do this now.

You just have Powerline unit (non WiFi) at the router connected by Ethernet and plugged into the mains.

Then you need another Unit at each mini plugged into the mains and connected to the mini by Ethernet. Here I am using non WiFi units but they can also be WiFi if desired. WiFi units still have Ethernet connections for the mini.

Don't suppose you could PM me a link for them?

Theres a few and would hate to buy the wrong ones :')

Thanks for all the assistance

Hi @Spiug

Mine are earlier 1200 units.

I believe these are still available but personally now I think you should go for the latest 2400 Magic units.

I would suggest a non WiFi starter kit to connect the first mini and router.

edit removed wrong link

Then add a WiFi unit at the second mini. This will give you Ethernet connection for the mini and also WiFi for other devices.

Hi @Spiug

The following link should take you to the correct area but you then need to select the magic 2. 2400. Lan starter kit at £85.99.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-Magic-LAN-Add-Powerline/dp/B07H5VNN3T/ref=asc_df_B07H66RLXD/?th=1

Then add a WiFi Adaptor (if you want additional WiFi at the second mini.)

This is expensive at £109.99

If you don't want the WiFi (you could add some later) but the one above would give you the chance to test the WiFi capabilities.)

That's what I am using here @Spiug

However these will not give you any WiFi just Ethernet connection.

You only need Three to connect two minis.

Four would let you try one at the main Q box.

You could buy WiFi units later if you want to broaden the BT Wi Fi
