My telephone line extension is faulty, I have read that for my viewing card to work the line has to be connected to the sky box is this true.

No. Your Sky box has to be connected to the phone line for the first 12 months for contractual reasons, or permanently if you have Sky Multiroom. It has no effect on your viewing card whether it's connected or not. If it's not connected, you won't be able to use the box's interactive features, or order Box Office movies.
