If the "Plug In Watch" box is connected to my Sky Box overnight, the following day my Sky Box turns itself off, even with the green light showing, and will not come on until it has had the power turned off and back on again

You mean the On Demand Connector? There's an issue with some of these which causes exactly the problem you highlight. Sky are aware and are investigating a fix. Meanwhile, the workaround is to disconnect the On Demand Connector when you're not actually using the On Demand service.
