Very slow broadband speeds

I have very slow connection speeds, set up is router plugged into master socket as is the only phone connection in the house, there are extensions that are only used by the sky box.

Here is the promise at time of purchase

When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 2.0Mb

And here are the actual stats

ROUTER STATISTICS

System Up Time: 0:36:58

Any help greatly appreciated as these speeds are not acceptable for what we are paying.

You've got a very long line. There is room for improving your download speed. A call to Sky asking for your line to be manually configured will sort you out.

If you have a Sky box connected at your master socket make sure the setup is in the following format:

I would also recommend you to get a filtered faceplate and install it at your master socket. This will filter out the ADSL signal at the master socket making all your other extensions voice only. You will also no longer require micro-filters at your extensions. On a line as long as yours every kilobyte counts. In this manner you can make sure everything is top notch from your end.

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

Hi there,

I agree, my broadband speed is appalling.

I signed up to Sky last Dec as we had probs with Free View due to living in rural area.

However, my BT broadband speed was brill. Since being with Sky, despite being informed they were upgrading it in our area - it is rubbish. I have to keep re-booting the laptop. Done all the checks they recommend - still no better!

Hi Debbie1980

Firstly welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your connection speeds.

Can I ask you to complete the following procedure to ensure your set up is correct and can you also post your connection statistics.

Please use this link to access the router, this will allow us to see if improvements can be made.

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

My broadband is rubbish and as a previous correspondent when with BT it was much faster. I was taken in by sky marketing.

I recently stayed with friends in Bulgaria a former member of the Soviet Block. In many ways it is very backward early 20th century however it did not matter where I was, in a hotel using a hotel PC, with friends in a large town or with others in a small village it made my UK home and laptop PC broadband speeds seem positively ancient.:manfrustrated:

Hi Stormwolf+the+Pagan,

Are you having issues with your broadband connection or is the speed just slower than you would like?

Have you tried the procedure outlined above in my previous post? Can you also post your router connection statistics to allow the community to see if there is room for improvement.

Thanks

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

I have also had ridiculously slow broadband. I've rung up and have had them do all their usual checks and had an engineer come out to see if there was any errors in the line, there wasn't.

I was quoted speeds of between 5mb and 11mb and I can honestly say I've never even reached 5. It's usually between 0 and 2.

I'm lost for ideas so if any techies can help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

Hi JustSarahB

Great to hear from you on the Sky Forum.

As you are having problems with your speed please try the troubleshooting here. If this does not help I would advise trying your router in your test socket if you have one, or in the master socket on it's own if you don't, with a different filter and posting the router statistics you see there along with the statistics from your current configuration.

master socket.JPG.

If you have a horizontal split across your master socket as shown in the picture just above the microfilter then you should have a test socket. Remove anything you have plugged in to the socket then undo the two screws and gently remove the bottom half of the faceplate (it may have wires attached to the back). You should then see the test socket in the bottom right corner. If the faceplate is one piece of plastic then you don't have a test socket so don't attempt this.

To get the full router statistics go to http://192.168.0.1 then log in with admin and sky and click on show statistics.

Thanks

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

I have been a sky broadband subscriber for over two years.  I have a Netgear DG934g router.  After the initial commissioning my speed was around 5Mb.  Ok but not brilliant.  I know that I live a fair distance from the exchange.  I then found out that a near neighbour was acheiving speeds of close to 8Mb so i rang Sky who manually configured the line to synch at around 7Mb.  They wouldnt go any higher as they warned of stability issues and dropouts....I accepted this.  I have never found the router to be any good for wireless connections and cannot get a signal at all in several rooms of my house and a poor / weak / inconsistent one in others.  I reported this to Sky who were uninterested.  The lady I spoke to said it could be a variety of things such as

1.  having a really large house too big for the wifi signal to travel.    Hell no !   I live in a tiny 1980s 3 bed.

2.  I could have  lead lined walls !   I kid you not...those were her exact words...   well again No!  the walls are thin plasterboard... we can hear the neighbours opening and closing doors , so I dont think its that.

I suppose I could buy a new  N quality router from Sky...but why should I ?

so things continued  for 18 months or so, quite nicely , very consistently, no major dramas with the broadband.  In October last year I noted a considerable drop in speed, synching at 5.2Mb . On checking with the "my sky" site I saw that this coincided with line testing.

Today I am synching at 4.09 Mb and see that line testing commenced yesterday.

This is really getting annoying now.  I am not happy at the continual erosion in speeds for no reason.  There has never been a problem with my line.  If this reduction continues then I will be taking my custom elsewhere.  I take the whole package from Sky... Phone , broadband  and TV  and I have stayed out of loyalty up until now even though I have several other options available to me in my locality.  It seems to me that Sky are taking advantage and are prepared to offer a worse serice as long as I dont notice or complain.

I have run through the usual suggested checks etc and they make no difference.. I firmly believe that the only reason for my speed dropping is down to Sky

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

Hi mfqy94,

Line test constantly runs in the background of your broadband connection.

Your Noise margin is extremely high at 13db where we recommend a noise margin of 7db.

Can I ask if you are connected to the master socket or test socket?

If you are connected to the master socket, can I ask you to remove the faceplate and connect to the test socket behind it. Upon doing so can you then post up the router statistics from the test socket.

Thanks

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

hi

I am  connected to an extension  socket on the BT line as the WiFi range of the router is woeful at best and non existent at worst. If I connect to the master socket then I cannot use any wifi device except in the hallway next to the main socket  ( not good ).  The stats dont change that much even when the router is connected to the master socket to be honest. It's an old style (  1980s)  BT master socket and doesnt have a test socket. I have been in touch with Sky Help centre and they have manually reconfigured the line to 6.9Mb which is fine but obviously doesnt deal with the poor wifi signal.

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

Hi
we have had the same connection that is 0.64 kb speed for quite a while now I have done almost everything

i can think of to get the right connection that we are supposed to be getting we are on the unlimited package

that should give us up to 20 mbspeed I have changed the channel in the broadband setup menu and that

doesn't change the connection what so ever so I was wondering if we could get our line manually configured thanks.

Re: Very slow broadband speeds

My sky broadband became active yesterday. But I must admit that the speeds are exceptionally slow, the router states a speed of around 4096k b/s but the actual speed when tested is lower. I dont understand why my speed is so much lower when I will around 200m from my local exchange and my previous provider (O2) gave me speeds of up to 15 mb/s.

Other then that, connection is solid and doesnt break.:smileywink:
