The TV you have and whether it's switched on or not shouldn't make any difference to your Sky box's ability to record. What reason does your Sky box give for failing to record? Highlight the failed recording in the planner and press the i button on your remote - the failure reason will be shown in the programme synopsis.
Your TV not switching to the Sky box when you turn it on is not a fault. Sky+HD boxes don't send a signal to force your TV to switch to the HDMI source. However, check your TV manual: you may find there's a TV setting to switch to a particular HDMI port when you switch it on.
