Eventually all electrical products will suffer from the inevitable. The Gremlins will get in and your Set top box might freeze or not respond to your remote control.

I've got some handy tips which will help you get your Sky box back up and running.

Check your remote

Pressing Sky on your remote should turn your set top box on, if it's not responding double check that the LED at the top of the remote flashes when you press the button. If not, the issue could be with your remote. To confirm, press standby on the top of your Sky box.

Check Ventilation

It is completly normal for your box to run warm but there's no getting away from it, when things get hot they don't work as well. Make sure your Sky box has enough ventilation and consider; has the cat been sat on it? Is the box in an enclosed cabinet?

Power reset

It seems obvious but it fixes so many minor bugs, so it's always worth turning the power off at the mains for a few minutes. Once you've turned the power back on, give your set top box 3-4 minutes before trying to switch it back on.

Update software

Try re-installing the software on your Sky+HD box. This will take around 10 mins.

Reset your Box

As a last resort. a System Reset permanently deletes all recordings, downloads, reminders and series links. You can restore copies of anything you’ve bought using Buy & Keep at

  • Press Services
  • Press 0,0,1, Select (Setup should be highlighted)
  • Scroll to System Reset, press Select
  • A confirmation banner will appear, press Select to continue.

Your Sky Box will go into standby, give it a t least 4 minutes before trying to start it up again.

  • Disconnect your set top box from the mains power
  • Press and hold the left and right arrow buttons on top of the box
  • Whilst holding down the arrow buttons, reconnect the power
  • Continue to hold down the arrow buttons until you see the playback circle on your box light up
  • Once the playback circle is lit, you can release the arrows and you should press Select on top of the box twice
  • Give your Set top Box at least 4 minutes before trying to start it up again

I joined Sky in 2011 and haven't looked back since! I am passionate about helping others and all things Sport. My favourite TV show changes all the time, but I bought The West Wing Box Set from Sky Store, which I regularly re-watch.

Some time ago I upgraded to Sky Q , to sky Q silver package with an added mini box , I kept my two HD boxes in the hope that I could use them in my caravan for freeview , one being the standard sky HD box and the other being the more expensive 2TB HD box.
Unfortunately as they have not been used for some time when I set up both boxes I get the , your skybox in initialising, and then after some time the no signal message, I have done all the checks I know of including restore to defaults, but still no joy, how may I get these two boxes running again, any help will be very much appreciated, TIA.

Hi PauliePur,

Sky boxes which are no longer in use can be used as freesat boxes.

Freesat boxes receive their channels via satellite broadcast and would need to be connected to a dish at your caravan site.

If you're already using a dish, it sounds like this may be out of alignment.

Why not ask the Sky+ Community for some advice?

Hi Mark , I have used my boxes at the caravan many times but since I got SkyQ these two boxes do not get past the initialising stage, has to be some firmware issue, as the sky dish is perfectly aligned , thank you for your reply👍

The fact that you have used the boxes at your caravan in the past does not prclude the possibility that the dish has become mis-aliigned or the LNB has failed or both. The only reliable method to check the dish alignment and LNB function is using a meter. Unless you have one your only recourse is Sky - £65 - or a local installer - £??.

Yes I do use a meter and can align the dish without problem as the meter I use has a built in screen so I can see that the LMB is working , the problem is with the two boxes I think they have been disabled by sky
