Subtitles Sky Go

Enough is enough. Someone please give me an answer to when Sky Player/Go will get subtitles. I requested this back end of 2010 and was told it coming soon. Its now 2012!!!

Don't give me the answer of coming soon, what is your timeline please. Also subtitles need to be supported on all devices as well, BBC iplayer does this, there is no excuse for you not to do this as well. If you say that the software not been written for subtitles then may i suggest you hire a decent team to launch a new version of sky go with subtitle support built in.

Sky are you seriously in this day and age going to carry on with the whole don't care about disabled people attitude who are paying the same amount (but can't use 100%) of your services?

Is it going to take court action to make you realise that you need to provide for your disabled customers?

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

Hi deafguy,

Welcome to the Sky Help Forum, I understand your frustration at the lack of subtitles on Sky Go, unfortunately we have no further updates or information on plans for this. We have passed your comments along to the Sky Go team however we cannot provide a timescale for subtitles to be added to the service.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

Thanks Robert for replying, but since it's over two years and the problem is still not addressed it appears that Sky DOESN'T care about disabled people.

So i guess deaf people would have to now consider legal action to change the law to force you to do this. In America there is a legal requirement to provide subtitles (captions over there) on video over the internet and catch up services.

In this country lucky for sky there is no such requirement yet. You don't even provide subtiron anytime+ either which is bang out of order! You have no excuse at all for no subtitles on anytime+ since you already subtitle them on live TV.

Also why are you blocking rooted devices from sky go? BBC iplayer works, what your excuse?

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

Hi deafguy,

We will pass your comments along to the relevant teams. The technology for Sky Anytime+ to offer Subtitles is not quite ready yet but it is something that we're looking into and will be offering hopefully in the future, the same applies to Sky Go as we hope to develop the service further and add support for Subtitles however as mentioned previously we cannot provide a timescale for this at the moment.

Sky Go is blocked on rooted Android devices and Jailbroken iOS devices due to contractual obligations in place with the content providers to protect the content we are offering over the service.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

I feel your angst deafguy, it is extremely frustrating as the might of sky can't provide subtitles on sky go, sounds like a cop out, and don't provide on anytime+ as technology not available mmmm my sky+ box records shows with subtitles, is anytime+ not just a bigger version of my sky+ or am I being stupid.

Sky, you need to sort this out, sky go could be a great service, but at the moment your discriminating against people with hearing difficulties, excuse my pun, but it is not a mute point, what you are saying is we are not allowed to view your content,

Nope. Your answer on the other post isn't considered acceptable with the deaf community. Its the same answer i got TWO YEARS ago when it was sky player. Anytime is rubbish as well no subtitles at all. This weekend there are films showing live with subtitles but at the same time on anytime+ there isn't any. That is taking the (removed), excuse my language but seriously it is!!!! You know full well subtitleas take little space, so don't give the trying to save file size rubbish as downloading a HD 3gb film and then a 50mb file for subtitles makes no different at all.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

I also echo deafguy's sentiments.

I am hard of hearing too, and use subtitles where I can.  I find it VERY frustrating when I want to watch something using SkyGo, but cannot use subtitles on it.  It has put me off a lot of films/programs.

I am paying top whack for the Sky Service, yet not getting the support that free services (such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player etc) offer.

Come on Sky, get you finger out and help us deaf people out.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

Interesting your comment deafguy regarding USA requirements.  I have a home in Florida and was amazed to find captions available on VHS tapes and as you rightly say, almost every TV programme has captions.  Also very interesting is the availability of ST on Sky rentals.

Sky Go is my main source of Sky programmes and even with two expensive hearing aids and Bose headphones I really struggle to understand almost every American dialect in the many available titles.

Surely if they can produce something as sophisticated as the Sky box, adding ST to computer downloads should be a walk in the park.   All the other UK providers can do it, even from the USA,  ABC and NBC players viewed over a VPN link show their words onscreen.

We deaf folk need a better service Sky.  Eh?

Funny thing is, I have an app on my tablet and phone which is TOTALLY free and got built in subtitle support. Rip a DVD to it then copy the subtitle file from the DVD onto the device, make sure the video and subtitle file got the same name and up it appears. FREE - TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE.

VHS - Who remembers them! They all had subtitles on them! Especially the Disney ones. You could get VHS players that can turn subtitles on and off with just a button, this is LAST century technology.

Sky somehow cannot provide it?

Its now an legal requirement in the USA (started 1st October 2012) that ALL SHOWS AND FILMS made from 1st April 2012 MUST have subtitles on TV and any form of catchup, demand and internet streaming. (thats the entire of Sky products covered then!) Everything made before 1st April 2012 have a different deadline date sometime next year. I love this law, but its obviously in the wrong country :smileyfrustrated:

Everyone concerned on this should email [Removed] and complain to them. Expect useless answers though, but get everyone you know that wants subtitles to complain there, the more the better. Also write to your local MP and complain to OFCOM. I seen on another post that Sky are required to show subtitles on their channels but they say it doesn't apply to their internet stuff like Sky Go or Anytime+. I disagree as its the same content.

Also if you are not getting straight answers, LEAVE sky and encourage others to do the same. State your reason for leaving is subtitles on Sky Go and Anytime+ - DO NOT ACCEPT AN DISCOUNT OFFER unless is 25% of the orginal cost, that how much I feel is correct for the services. BBC iplayer and others offer subtitles over the internet. Get a Freesat Recorder and "Sky Plus" for free that way. YouView looks seriously promising, why have sky with all that content avaiable? Lovefilm is great for films and the 3D content got subtitles there. For those who want Sky Sports, I suggest socialise down the pub, you will help keep the local boozer open, make new friends and enjoy company with exisiting ones.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

Sky deleted the email address in the last post as it was "personal details". It's not, its from their own website, so everyone you will need to find the accessibility page on sky.com. the email address is shown there. Its also under subtitles on OFCOM website.

Re: Subtitles Sky Go

I'm not deaf, but I do like subtitles sometimes. Actors today seem to be taught every acting technique other than diction and I use subtitles to help fill in the gaps. I am lucky, though, that at least I can follow a plot despite the frustration. Deaf people don't even have this. It's a total disgrace that Sky don't fix this, if not for me, for them. Until this is addressed I can only think of Sky as patronising, uncaring, dishonourable cheats who are happy to take the money while dismissing disability issues with an "I'm alright Jack" shrug of the shoulders. Shame on you Sky. Fix it and change my mind. BBC I-player has subtitles. Conclusion - Sky Go is decidedly inferior. Go for it deafguy - I'm with you 100%.
