Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Afternoon,

I started downloading a film from my sky anytime plus menu.  2hrs later it is still downloading and only at 13%.  I have sky broadband and download speed is 3.1Mbps, upload 0.8Mbps.

Not really anytime viewing if it's going to take me all day to download one film!

Can the broadband speed be increased?  I thought films were downloaded within minutes not days!

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Hi Rocksoff,

Welcome to the forum.

Downloads times can vary and are dependant on factors such as you Broadband speed, available bandwidth (this can be affected by other devices using the connection at the same time) the size of the download (HD are considerably larger than SD) amongst other variables.

So we can get a better idea of the sort of speeds you are getting, are you able to post up a copy of your router stats?

  • In your browser, navigate to 192.168.0.1
  • Username: admin Password: sky
  • Click 'show statistics' at the bottom of the page and copy the table contents.

Thanks

Hi Andy

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you believe the film is still downloading 31 hours after we started dowloading it. Hope the info below helps to sort out why this might be happening.

Many thanks

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

I have had the same problem for months. This happens on every download regardless of HD or standard. I received a new box to day so was trying it out again but same issue - 10 minutes & 1% download only. No, I am not going to wait 2 hours to download a movie.

I downloaded a magazine onto my iPad in 7 minutes last night (190MB) over wifi so the connection works fine. The anytime modem is connected via ethernet all as supplied by Sky.

I also now cant find the standard anytime, please provide how to activate the standard version.

I will have the full sky package in a couple of weeks as I have just transferred my phone line to you.

The standard anytime content is available under the "Showcase" heading on your Anytime+ menu. Anything in Showcase is pre-downloaded to your box.

Sadly the speed you can download films will depend on your broadband speed. The HD films are around 4GB each so this could take quite some time on a slow connection. It also depends on WHO your ISP is because some ISPs will throttle traffic from certain sites.

I am on Virgin 100MB and last night I managed to download 28 films in 8 hours so I don't think the problem is at Sky's end.

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Thanks Scotty, unfortunately for Sky, my ISP is them as well & they profess not to "throttle" traffic ...

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Hi SuperSharks,

Looking at your broadband stats your noise level is a bit low which could mean that this is why Anytime+ downloads are slow.

Anytime+ is a progressive download service which requires selected programmes to download to the planner before they can be viewed. Estimated wait times to start viewing are based on a sustained internet connection speed.

Could I ask you to follow the steps on this link and repost the stats again for me?

Thanks,

Anne

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Hi Rocksoff,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Can you advise how the Sky+HD box is connected to the router? Also, can you advise if it was only this film that is having this problem, or do all HD/SD programmes have the same issue?

Thanks,

Anne

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

We have replaced the microfilters twice & have them on each point even where we dont have anything plugged in.

BT sent an engineer twice to sort the line out & eventually he put us onto the spare & we seem to be more stable.

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

Hi SuperSharks,

Thanks for coming back to me.

If you have Sky broadband, I would advise trying your router in your test socket if you have one, or in the master socket on it's own if you don't, with a different filter and posting the router statistics you see there along with the statistics from your current configuration.

master socket with microfilter

If you have a horizontal split across your master socket as shown in the picture just above the microfilter then you should have a test socket. Remove anything you have plugged in to the socket then undo the two screws and gently remove the bottom half of the faceplate (it may have wires attached to the back). You should then see the test socket in the bottom right corner. If the faceplate is one piece of plastic then you don't have a test socket so don't attempt this.

To get the full router statistics go to http://192.168.0.1 then log in with admin and sky and click on show statistics.

Can you do this and then repost your stats from the test socket?

Thanks,

Anne

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

The delay from my original posting was due to awaiting the phone line to be transferred from BT to sky. It was done on Tuesday & here are my results when plugged into the master socket. I have also received the new wi-fi box which I will connect up & respond with those details.

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

this is with all other phone line connections unplugged but filters still in sockets. Therefore the only element in the phone line is the router

Re: Anytime Plus (HD) Slow Downloading times

finally, some independent testing

Date Download Speed Upload Speed

Today 10:12635 kbps (79.4kB/s)505 kbps (63.1kB/s)

another site gave 609 & 472

The old router appears to give faster downloads ... so much for an improved service!
