Sky Hub : How to Configure Port Forwarding

The Sky Hub has a built-in firewall to prevent unauthorised external access to devices that are connected to the internet. In using some software or applications through your Sky Hub you may need to reconfigure the firewall to allow external access to devices for certain associated services through your Sky Hub. An example may be online games or hosting of an FTP server on your home PC to allow others to upload or download files. The Sky Hub allows you to do this using a feature called Port Forwarding.



Note: This feature is for Advanced Users only. Incorrect configuration may compromise security and cause loss of your internet service. Please read the Warning and Disclaimer of Liability at the end of this guide before using this information.


Prior to undertaking port forwarding you should :


  • Check all configuration changes to your existing service/application user manual
  • Back up your existing settings via the Backup Settings menu under the Maintenance tab.


 To complete port forwarding on your Sky Hub you will require the following information : -


  • Protocol for the port you need to open (TCP or UDP)
  • Port range
  • Port number to translate to
  • IP address of the device you would like the traffic forwarded to


Port Forwarding with a Sky Hub : A step-by-step Guide


Note : in this example, we are going to assume that you wish to open up port 3389 for use with RDP service.


  1. Open a new web browser window
  2. Type into the address bar and press enter.
  3. This will present you with your Sky Hub Menu.
  4. Select the Security tab and in the login box, enter the username admin and the password sky (this password may differ if you have amended the password settings).

Once logged in, select Firewall Rules and click Add on Inbound Services

  1. Under Firewall Rules – Inbound Services, when adding a new rule you will see a pre-defined list of a number of services. Select the name of the service that you want to allow access through your firewall.

Note : For this example we'll assume that the service is not populated in the list, so click on the Cancel button to return to Firewall Rules page.



1. Go to the Services menu to create a user-defined service and click  Add Custom Service.

2. Enter a name for the service and enter the port settings.


3. Select the Protocol for the port you need to open (TCP or UDP or both), the port range and then press Apply.


See below for an example of port forwarding for a Remote Desktop.

4. Select the Firewall Rules menu and click Add on Inbound Services. Under the Service heading, select the application that you've added from the drop down menu. Under the Action heading select ALLOW always.

5. Under the Send to LAN Server heading enter the IP address of the attached device you would like the traffic forwarded to. (e.g. your home PC)


Note: To find out which devices are connected to your Sky Hub select the Maintenance tab then Attached Devices tab.

 6. Once complete, click Apply  to save your changes.

If you experience issues whilst setting up Port Forwarding on your Sky Hub below are some key elements to review :


  • Have you forwarded all of the ports you need to, and are you using the right protocol?
  • Is there active Firewall on your home PC - such as McAfee, Norton or Windows Firewall? You may also need to setup port forwarding within the firewall on the PC.
  • If adding a new Port Forwarding rule is preventing your Sky Hub from functioning as you require, you can either disable the newly added rule by unchecking Enable. Alternatively you can select the radio box next to the rule and select Delete or reset the Sky Hub to default factory settings.
  • To reset your Sky Hub, hold down the Reset button on the back of the Sky Hub for 10 seconds, until the power light flashes.

Note: Factory resetting will revert the Sky Hub back to its default settings, removing all modifications.


If you require further assistance, submit a post in the Sky Hub forum, giving as much information as possible including your set up  and what ports and protocols you're using.
